Gay hate led to horror attack

July 29, 2008

A man left fighting for his life after being badly beaten was the victim of a homophobic attack. Michael Causer, 19, was battered on Friday morning in Tarbock Road, Huyton, as he walked home after a night out. Today police described the attack as a hate crime.

Merseyside police said Mr Causer was thought to have known his attackers.

Yesterday James O'Connor, 19, of Reeds Road, Huyton, appeared at court in connection with the attack. He was charged with grievous bodily harm and appeared at Huyton Magistrates' Court for a short hearing. He was given bail on the condition he observes a curfew, does not contact witnesses and does not enter Merseyside. He will appear at Liverpool crown court on August 12.

A second youth questioned over the weekend about the assault remains on bail on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. Detectives executed search warrants as they hunted a third youth wanted in connection with the assault.
